Taming the Tech: A Dad’s Struggle (and Triumph) with Screen Time
| April 10, 2024Let’s face it, screens are everywhere. From TVs to tablets, our kids are bombarded with digital stimulation.
Statistics tell a concerning story: a 2023 Kaiser Family Foundation study shows that by age 8, kids in the world spend an average of 4-8 hours a day on screens! While educational apps exist, there’s a nagging feeling that something’s missing – the kind of unstructured, imaginative play I experienced growing up.
As a father of two, an 8-year-old boy and a curious 3-year-old girl, I completely understand this dilemma. Educational apps and shows can be tempting. They’re convenient, engaging, and sometimes, a lifesaver when you need a few minutes to breathe.
But deep down, I yearn for them to experience the magic of my childhood – endless games of street soccer, bike rides with scraped knees, and adventures exploring the neighborhood. We weren’t glued to screens; we were glued to life itself, creating memories in the real world, not the digital one.
So, how do we, as parents, find a balance? Here’s my journey – a work in progress, but one with some victories to share:
- Screen Time Limits: It all starts with boundaries. We set clear time limits on tablets and TV, offering alternatives like board games, drawing, or building with blocks. It wasn’t easy at first, but with consistency, the whining subsided, replaced by a spark of creativity.
- Embrace the Outdoors: Sunshine and fresh air are magic potions for kids. We make a conscious effort to spend time outdoors – playing in the park, taking walks, or simply enjoying the backyard. Nature offers endless possibilities for exploration and learning, fueling their imaginations and burning off energy.
- Rediscover Playtime: Remember hopscotch, tag, or hide-and-seek? These classic games are timeless for a reason. We incorporate them into our afternoons, rediscovering the simple joy of non-digital play.
- Lead by Example: Kids are perceptive. If they see me constantly glued to my phone, the message is mixed. I make a conscious effort to put my phone down during playtime, engaging fully with them in the present moment.
- Make it Fun: Reducing screen time shouldn’t feel like punishment. We brainstorm engaging activities together, exploring new hobbies like cooking, gardening, or building things with Legos. Their excitement fuels my own, reminding me of the joy of learning through exploration.
It’s a constant battle, and there are definitely days when the iPad siren song seems irresistible. But by setting limits, embracing the outdoors, and rediscovering the power of play, we’re slowly creating a healthier balance for our family. The laughter echoing in the backyard, the muddy footprints after a rainy day adventure – these are the moments I cherish.

P.S. For those wondering, Westlea , the basketball court, and my auntie’s house still stand – constant reminders of a simpler time. Maybe one day, I can take my kids there to experience a bit of my own childhood magic.
